The new DynamoDB from Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) is not the first cloud-based database offering from the company, but it is distinctive. The new database is a highly scalable NoSQL database that is built on the company’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform and addresses what Amazon sees as the need for a database program to handle web-based social game-playing and other web applications.
Amazon’s CTO writes on his blog:
With Amazon DynamoDB, developers scaling cloud-based applications can start small with just the capacity they need and then increase the request capacity of a given table as their app grows in popularity. Their tables can also grow without limits as their users store increasing amounts of data. … Amazon DynamoDB automatically spreads the data and traffic for a table over a sufficient number of servers to meet the request capacity specified by the customer.
