Digital media research firm comScore Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR) has released its ranking of the top 50 U.S. web properties for July and the list is topped by the usual suspects. comScore counted a total audience of unique website visitors of more than 221 million, about two-thirds of the total U.S. population.

Leading the pack are sites owned by Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) with more than 190 million unique visitors. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) is second with about 169 million unique visitors, followed by Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) with about 163 million, Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) with about 161 million, and Aol Inc. (NYSE: AOL) with 110 million. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) was sixth with about 104 million, and no other properties broke the 100 million mark.

Some interesting tidbits from the research:

  • Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) leaped into the top 10 on the strength of NBC’s Olympic Games coverage.
  • Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), in 23rd place, and Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT), at 46th place, are the only traditional retailers to make the list.
  • Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) is the only telecom company in the top 50, at 39th place.

The research firm also noted that month-over-month the largest percentage increase in unique visitors was shown by the online trading category of the business/finance sector, up 23% in July. Websites in the pets sector showed a jump of 18%, while toys and beauty/fashion/style sites rose by 11%.
