The 4 Stocks That Sank the Market

June 30, 2014: Markets opened mixed on Monday with both the S&P 500 and the DJIA opening lower and the Dow spending most of the day in negative territory. The Nasdaq index traded higher all day as the tech sector posted a gain of more than 0.2% today. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded down 0.20% for the day, the S&P 500 was down 0.06%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.24%.

Oddly the biggest loss among DJIA stocks today was posted by Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT). The stock traded at $41.74, down 1.22% in a 52-week range of $30.84 to $42.29. Share volume was about 30% below the daily average of around 30 million shares traded. A report that business spending on IT would not grow as fast as originally believed weighed down the shares today..

The Boeing Co. (NYSE) traded down 1.16% at around $127.03 in a 52-week range of $98.99 to $144.57. Volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 3.4 million shares traded. The company had no news of note today, but it is believed to be bidding on a tanker contract with the government of South Korea.

The Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) traded lower today, down 0.67% at $78.49 shortly before today’s close. The stock’s 52-week range is $73.61 to $85.82. Volume was about 20% below the daily average of around 7.6 million shares traded. P&G had no news today, and the stock gave back the raise it posted on Friday.

McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) traded lower by 0.90% at $100.56 shortly before the closing bell. The stock’s 52-week range is $92.22 to $103.78. Volume was about 40% lower than the daily average of around 4.6 million shares traded. The company had no news today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 10 looked to close higher today and 20 were on their way to a lower finish and one was headed to a flat close.
