Visa, Nike, Boost DJIA on Monday

July 10, 2017: Markets opened mixed Monday and never strayed far from the break-even line on a day with no major earnings reports nor any U.S. economic news. Tech and materials were Monday’s leading sectors; consumer staples and real estate the weakest. WTI crude oil for August delivery settled at $44.40 a barrel, up 0.4% on the day. August gold added 0.3% on the day to settle at $1,213.20. Equities were headed for a slightly higher close shortly before the bell as the DJIA traded up 0.06% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.20%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.54%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Monday was Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) which traded up 1.38% at $95.22. The stock’s 52-week range is $75.17 to $96.60. Volume was 45% below the daily average of around 8.2 million. The company had no specific news.

Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) traded up 1.22% at $58.69. The stock’s 52-week range is $49.01 to $60.33. Volume was about 40% below the daily average of about 10.4 million shares. The athletic gear maker had no specific news Monday.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) traded up 1.06% at $108.05. The stock’s 52-week range is $77.32 to $108.49 and the high was posted this afternoon. Volume was less than half the daily average of around 5 million shares. The company had no specific news Monday.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) traded up 0.97% at $70.14. The stock’s 52-week range is $52.47 to $72.89. Volume was less than half the daily average of around 25 million shares. The software giant released a new piece of enterprise cloud software this morning.

Of the Dow stocks, 16 are on track to close higher Monday and 14 are set to close lower.
