Sprint, Chesapeake Energy Tumble into Wednesday’s 52-Week Low Club

February 1, 2018: Here are four stocks trading with heavy volume among 138 equities making new 52-week lows in Thursday’s session. On the NYSE decliners led advancers by about 8 to 7 and on the Nasdaq, advancers and decliners closed about even.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) dropped about 5.7% Thursday to post a new 52-week low of $3.30 after closing at $3.50 on Wednesday. The stock’s 52-week high is $6.65. Volume was around 47 million, nearly 70% above the daily average of around 28.5 million. The company had no specific news but falling prices for natural gas are never good news for Chesapeake.

Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) fell about 7.9% Thursday to post a new 52-week low of $4.91 after closing at $5.33 on Wednesday. The 52-week high is $9.44. Volume of about 35 million was about double the daily average of around 17 million shares traded. The company had no specific news.

Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) traded down about 4.5% Thursday and posted a new 52-week low of $4.05 after closing Wednesday at $4.24. The stock’s 52-week high is $9.75. Volume was around 28 million, about 20% above the daily average of about 22 million shares. Another natural gas supplier getting hammered on lower prices.

Gulfport Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: GPOR) traded down about 3.7% Thursday and posted a new 52-week low of $9.79 after closing Wednesday at $10.17. The stock’s 52-week high is $21.50. Volume was over 8 million, about double the daily average of about  3.8 million shares. The company had no specific news, but then, it’s another natural gas-heavy producer.
