America’s navy is one of the most powerful in the world. Our nation owns quite a fleet of seafaring vessels, including some enormous aircraft carriers. However, the United States is not the only global power prioritizing its navy. Countries like China and Russia are also focused on their arsenal of ships.

In order to maintain the ability to transport troops, large equipment, and state-of-the-art machinery, these militaries rely on extremely large ships. Luckily, America is home to many of the world’s biggest ships. However, many of our adversaries are also equipped with these massive warships.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed ship lengths worldwide, using data from Military Machine to determine the world’s largest warships. Military Machine also provides information regarding ship class, name, and country of origin. We included supplementary data on the country of origin, total navy, and overall military power ranking from GlobalFirePower’s 2024 Military Strength Index.

An example of one such gigantic craft is China’s Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier, which is 999 feet long. Likewise, Russia owns a similar vessel, which is measured at 1,001 feet in length. Despite these huge ships being in the hands of non-Nato powers, America reigns supreme when it comes to large warships, with the longest in the U.S. arsenal being roughly 100 feet longer than our adversaries’ similar ships.

Understanding the strength of militaries worldwide helps us to better assess both our allies and our enemies. Combined with historical context, this information reveals how these countries have worked together and against one another over the years, their intentions for the future, and their present priorities.
