NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The dozens of countries that make up this organization, including the United States, are all allies, ready to come to each other’s defense in times of intense struggle. The military equipment and vehicles these countries own matter immensely, as they contribute a great deal to the strength of any given nation’s overall military power.
In particular, combat aircraft are a major part of these countries’ defense strategies. These planes and other aircraft ensure aerial superiority during times of war. Military aircraft owned by NATO countries are equipped with a diverse range of technologies and capabilities, and each country owns and deploys different models. For example, France operates the Dassault Rafale, while the U.K. uses the Eurofighter Typhoon.
To determine the NATO countries with the most combat aircraft, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 2024 military strength report from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. We ranked these countries according to which have the most fighter and attack aircraft. We included supplemental information regarding each country’s current air force and overall military strength ranking. We excluded NATO countries that do not have any combat aircraft. When looking at the numbers below, remember that the PwrIndx ranking is perfect at 0.0000.
