Will Incumbent President Joe Biden join the ranks of former presidents who lost their reelection bid? As Biden heads toward the race for a second term in the White House, he is in a uniquely weak position with American voters. Biden’s job approval rating currently stands at just 38% (the average of his total years in office is at 43%), according to Gallup survey data. Whether it be a political or personal characteristic that is driving these unfavorable views, President Biden has the lowest of any elected, post-World War II president at the start of their fourth year in office.

Voters who are highly educated, higher earning, and not religious are most likely to approve of how President Biden is handling his job. These Americans tend to be older and are more likely to reside in urban areas and identify as Black or Asian. Conversely, younger voters, as well as those who reside in rural areas, or identify as white or protestant are generally less likely to approve the president. (Here is a look at Biden’s disapproval rating in every state.)

Party affiliation is the strongest indicator of public opinion toward the Biden administration. Only 7% of likely Republican voters approve of Biden, compared to 61% of likely Democratic voters. (Here is a look at the most partisan issues in American politics.)

24/7 Wall St. identified the Americans with the lowest opinion of President Biden by using survey data from the Pew Research Center. Sub-categories of eight demographic distinctions were considered — age, educational attainment, gender, income, community, race and ethnicity, religion, and party affiliation — and listed Biden’s net approval and disapproval rating for each. Approval or disapproval ratings may not always add up to 100% due to rounding. Supplemental estimates of each group’s relative political influence are from the U.S. Census Bureau and other surveys, including the Public Religion Research Institute.
