To find the 40 most miserable countries in the world, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the World Happiness Report 2024.
All the most miserable countries have lower GDP per capita than the world average.

Happiness is that hard-to-define elusive state of being that everyone spends their life seeking. Because our environment is directly related to our happiness, the country we live in can affect our level of happy. Though happiness can be defined in many different ways and is obviously subjective, there are certain basic things in life that lead to less stress and a more peaceful existence.

Countries that offer a high quality of life, economic opportunities, and freedom of expression are conducive to feelings of happiness. It stands to reason that nations lacking these qualities are home to the most miserable people. Countries with rampant poverty and internal conflict are stress inducing and do not equate to happiness.

Gallup World Poll surveyed people from 143 countries, asking them to evaluate their lives on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 being the best. And the results, as noted, are not surprising.

To find the 40 most miserable countries in the world, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the World Happiness Report 2024, published with Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and an editorial board. Countries are ranked by the average score for 2021-2023, and the 40 with the lowest score are listed here. We also added gross domestic product per capita in current US dollars from the World Bank, life expectancy at birth (two factors found to explain happiness nationally), and population totals from the World Bank.

The Cantril ladder score is based on the Gallup World Survey, which asked people across 137 countries the following question: “Please imagine a ladder, with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top. The top of the ladder represents your best possible life, and the bottom represents your worst possible life. On which step of the ladder would you say you feel you stand at this time?”

All of the most miserable countries have lower GDP per capita than the world average of $12,688, with GDPs per capita ranging from $7,739 in Botswana (the seventh most miserable) to $356 in Afghanistan—the most miserable country in the world. Indeed, in 28 of the 40 countries, the report found that GDP per capita explains most of the (un)happiness scores. In the other 12, the social support factor explains the score the most.

The 19 most miserable countries have also become more miserable compared to the three-year period a decade ago, with Lebanon’s score decreasing the most, followed by Afghanistan. In general, “happiness fell in South Asia in all age groups. It also fell in North America, especially among the young. And it fell in the Middle East and North Africa in all age groups,” the report notes.

Why Does This Matter?

It is not surprising that most of the 26 countries on the list are in sub-Saharan Africa, with six others in the Middle East and North Africa. Another seven are in South Asia and Southeast Asia. It is equally unsurprising to find Ukraine listed here since it has been at war with Russia since February 2022. Many of these nations have lived in poverty, corruption, and violence for decades without relief in sight.
