The top 500 U.S. Internet retail sites received 208.6 million total visits on Cyber Monday according to research firm Experian. That’s a jump of 11% over last year’s online shopping total.

The five most visited sites on Cyber Monday this year:

  1. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) – 34.99 million visits, up 36% from 2011
  2. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) – 18.61 million visits, up 21%
  3. Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) – 9.34 million visits, up 10%
  4. Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) – 8.7 million visits, down 4%
  5. J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) – 5.33 million visits, down 1%

The most visited retail site on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday was Amazon. Walmart received the second-largest number of visits on each of those days.

Experian also notes that traffic to online retail web sites is up 8% year-over-year. Combined with record high spending and a not-so-great weekend for bricks-and-mortar stores, online retailers look good going into the year’s biggest shopping season. Many retailers will be reporting November same-store sales results tomorrow.
