Switzerland, specifically Geneva, became synonymous with high-quality watches in the middle of the 16th century. In 1541, when a man by the name of Jean Calvin announced that wearing ornamental jewelry was illegal, goldsmiths were forced to focus their craft on watchmaking. The Watchmakers Guild of Geneva was established in 1601. As Geneva overflowed with expert watchmakers, many craftsmen moved to other areas of the country. Roughly two hundred years later, by 1790, Geneva was responsible for exporting more than 60,000 watches.

Owning a Swiss watch is like being part of a super-elite, luxury, consumerist club. Swiss watches are the gold standard of accuracy, which is why they are so sought after. They are so accurate, in fact, that most aviation companies require pilots to have a COSC-certified Swiss watch. Most Swiss watches cost a minimum of $1,000 and can go as high as a few million. These watches are a status symbol of superiority in the form of mastering time and elegance. So, what makes a Swiss Watch a Swiss Watch?

To be considered an authentic Swiss watch, the piece must meet several requirements. Firstly, it must have “Swiss Made” inscribed somewhere on the dial, usually at the six o’clock position and in capital letters. It must have been manufactured, cased, and inspected in Switzerland, and at least 50% of its components must have been made and assembled in Switzerland. The movement cannot exceed 50mm in diameter or be thicker than 12mm. Additionally, the top 3% of all Swiss watches are certified by the COSC.

There are, of course, a couple of important things to keep in mind regarding Swiss watches: counterfeit watches and “Swiss Movt” watches.

Swiss Movt is not the same as a genuine Swiss watch. Many lower-end watch companies will advertise their timepieces as “Swiss Movt,” which means that only the movement was constructed in Switzerland. Although this type of watch may be a quality piece, it doesn’t follow any of the other requirements. These watches can be much more budget-friendly, sometimes starting at around $20.

Counterfeit watches are really hard to spot and sometimes the only way to do so is by having a professional look at the watch mechanisms under the face. Be cautious when buying Swiss watches second-hand or at flea markets.

The RJC is partnered with the UN Global Compact and is ISEAL Code compliant. It performs third-party audits of member companies and issues certifications.

Blancpain was the first watchmaker that developed a diver’s watch in 1953 which was used by the French Navy, and the U.S. military.

The Audemars Piguet Foundation has been committed to worldwide forest conservation since 1992. It partners with not-for-profits and NGOs globally in order to achieve goals such as protecting biodiversity, encouraging family farming, planting trees, teaching organic farming practices, restoring mangroves, and reconstituting forests.
