Dell (DELL) got a dose of synchronicity today. Events that do not appear to be related at first glance may be equally difficult for the struggling PC giant.
The first bit of information is that Taiwan PC company Acer may buy US PC manufacturer Gateway (GTW). The combination would create a competitor for Dell with strong footholds in Asia and the US. Acer’s PC shipments topped three million in Q4 According to Information Week: "DisplaySearch said. Acer’s growth narrowed the distance between it and Dell to less than a half million units"
Just as Dell’s competition on the PC front is bulking up, it appears that the Apple (AAPL) Mac is picking up share in the professional market aided by the relatively new ability of the Mac to run Microsoft (MSFT) WIndows. According to The Wall Street Journal: "Helping Macs gain a bit of ground within the workplace are a growing array of programs that let the machines run Windows or Windows applications on Macs with little loss of performance".
Dell already has enough problems. It doesn’t need anymore help.
