It was just before World War I when the German military started using an early version of the 9mm pistol. It was known as the 9mm Luger and was invented by the Austrian weapons developer, Georg Luger. By 1908, the German Army adopted the Luger as its service pistol. Using data from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 22 companies making the most popular 9mm pistols in the United States. We reviewed manufacturing figures for thousands of federally licensed gunmakers in the United States and ranked them on total 9mm pistol production in 2022. Only companies that made at least 10,000 9mm pistols domestically in 2022 were considered. 24/7 Wall St. also independently verified that this information is the most up-to-date available.
