2 Diet Drinks a Day Could Double Diabetes Risk

The European Society of Endocrinology has just published a study that soda manufacturers will not like. People who drink two diet sodas a day can double their risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Specifically, the society’s journal said about this risk:

The OR (odds ratio) of type 2 diabetes was increased by 2.39 (95% CI: 1.39–4.09) in those consuming more than two servings of sweetened beverages per day compared with non-consumers.

The effects of diet drinks are already such that soda companies are besieged by criticism.

According to the Washington Post, an industry organization recently reacted to several studies critical of diet drinks:

In a statement, the American Beverage Association, said that “previous research, including human clinical trials, supports that diet beverages are an effective tool as part of an overall weight management plan. Numerous studies have repeatedly demonstrated the benefits of diet beverages–as well as low calorie sweeteners, which are in thousands of foods and beverages–in helping to reduce calorie intake.”

Diet Pepsi just got another black eye.
