Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) has said the its Kindle Fire is the best-selling item on its web site and it wants to give customers a chance to order the device as close to Christmas Day as possible and still get the reader under the tree. The new Kindle is not thought to be a big threat to sales of the iPad from Apple Inc., but the Nook reader from Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) and the e-reader from Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) could get pinched a little by Amazon’s latest move.

Amazon now guarantees delivery in time for Christmas for its free shipping service on orders of $25 or more for any order placed by December 19th. Orders placed after that could still arrive by the holiday, but customers will need to pay for the faster shipping.

The company has also promised buyers of its Kindle Fire that a free software upgrade will be available after the first of the year.
