U.S. equity markets opened lower this morning following news out of China that government is about to tighten restrictions on real estate transactions. In Europe, a consumer sentiment index came in much lower than expected and the U.K.’s construction PMI was lower than expected. There was no data release of note in the U.S. today, but the news out of China pushed down energy and basic materials stocks. Steelmakers took the brunt of the punishment. Natural gas is up 2.2% today at about $3.53 per million BTUs. Gold settled fractionally higher today at $1,572.40 an ounce.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up about 38 points to 14,127.63 (0.27%), the NASDAQ rose more than 12 points (0.39%) to 3,182.03, and the S&P 500 rose 0.46% or about 7 points to 1,525.23.
