October 19, 2017: The S&P 500 closed relatively flat at 2,562.23. The DJIA closed flat at 23,164.62. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.3% at 6,605.07.
Thursday was a relatively flat day for the broad U.S. markets after all of the major exchanges started out very negative. The Dow continues to hold above 23,000. Crude oil gave back some of its gains from earlier this week and traded lower in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle. The best performing sectors were Utilities and Health Care, up about 1% and 0.6%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were consumer staples, energy, and technology, down 0.52%, 0.34%, and 0.30%, respectively.

Crude oil was down over 1% at $51.36.
Gold was up 0.4% at $1,287.90.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) which traded down about 12% at $59.72. The stock’s 52-week range is $52.21 to $83.04. Volume was over 28 million versus the daily average of nearly 5 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE) which rose about 12% to $171.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $98.00 to $172.12. Volume was about 12 million compared to its average volume of nearly 11 million.
