Taking flight on April 18, 1941, the Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first fighter jet to see combat. This German aircraft was one of the most technologically advanced warplanes of its time, providing a significant advantage in aerial combat during World War II. (These were America’s fastest planes in World War II.)

Today’s modern fighter jets have come a long way since the Me 262. Now they include amazing stealth capabilities, heat-sensing cameras, sophisticated technology, and impressive flight speeds. Most are also designed to handle high altitudes and to reach them fairly quickly. Having the ability to operate in practically endless space above the battlefield certainly has its advantages. (Exploring the fastest and most powerful fighter jets in existence.)

Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a look at the fighter jets that can operate at the highest altitudes. To determine the fighter jets with the highest operational ceiling, 24/7 Wall St. referenced Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, aircraft, arms, and more. Aircraft were ranked by the maximum flight ceiling that they could reach. Supplemental data regarding manufacturer, speed, and more also came from Military Factory.
